International Traditions - As the evergreen tree became the foremost holiday symbol in early America, one inventive candy maker in colonial Williamsburg bent some of his popular peppermint sticks in the shape of a shepherd`s crook so that they could hang from a branch. The `cane` shape caught on and is now as much of a Christmas symbol as the tree.
